In recent years, the boundaries that once separated origins, functions, and meanings have grown increasingly fluid. Japanese craft, once understood primarily as utilitarian objects, is now reinterpreted as KOGEI—a realm of refined artistic expression and contemplation. At the same time, murals and sculptural forms rooted in street culture, once regarded merely as elements of the urban landscape, have claimed a definitive presence as art within museums, galleries, and the auction market. The lines between use, appreciation, and value continue to blur.

YAMADART is a place for those who have long chosen objects through the lens of “living” and “utility” to encounter the ambiguity and openness that multifaceted art affords—and to experience art on a more intimate, personal level. The gallery invites artists of diverse lineages—artists emerging from craft traditions, from street culture, or from cultural and ethnic heritage—each transcending their original frameworks and creating in dialogue with the contemporary moment.

Our roots lie in Yamadaya—today known as Hanamurasaki—a historic onsen ryokan that has cultivated customs and daily life alongside the hot springs for over 120 years across six generations. As an old saying goes, “Onsen is the spring of creation.” Hot springs have long embraced differing values, varied cultures, and at times even conflict itself—dissolving boundaries and nurturing countless emergent forms of creativity.

For more than a century, traditional Japanese ryokans welcomed writers, poets, and artists—figures who stayed, worked, and exchanged ideas during their time in residence. Much like contemporary artist-in-residence programs, these ryokans served as places where people of different backgrounds and nationalities met, bathed, conversed, and engaged in everyday cultural exchanges inspired by their surroundings. Works born from such environments continue to resonate across time, creating new points of connection long after their makers have passed.

YAMADART is a window into contemporary, multidisciplinary creativity—a place shaped by mingling, evolution, and transformation. At the same time, it serves as a pathway for cultivating imagination, cultural discourse, and artistic cross-pollination grounded in the generative, healing source of onsen culture itself.
