In her first exhibition in Japan, Eleanor Herbosch invites viewers into a quiet dialogue with the natural world. Inspired by the surroundings of her studio in Antwerp, Belgium, by landscapes across Europe, and most recently by the rich soils of Yamanaka Onsen, her paintings reflect moments in time where traces of process become landscapes in themselves. This is the story of nature and creativity, uniting.

The word Matter carries multiple meanings. It refers to that which has mass and occupies space, the tangible world we can touch, taste, and smell; materiality itself. It can also signify an idea, what occupies our thoughts. In this sense, matter exists simultaneously as both physical substance and inner presence. Quiet Matter reflects this duality, suggesting both the silent yet powerful force of the material world and the subtle states through which it is perceived.

Through Herbosch’s process, the works embody a quiet yet resonant presence. Layering earth and pigments onto linen, she reveals textures that invite attentive stillness and a heightened awareness of the soil’s vitality, bringing a quiet depth and contemplative atmosphere to a space.

Her practice is grounded in a mindfulness of place and material. The tactile and visual qualities of soil and local pigments echo the tones of the earth, while the rhythm of her process reveals a delicate beauty.
